Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola, who dominated the men’s marathon in Paris, has been named Male Out-of-Stadium Athlete of the Year at the World Athletics Awards 2024 in Monaco.

Following a fan vote, Tamirat received the honors on an evening that saw six athletes crowned in three categories – track, field and out of stadium.

Initially not expected to race the Paris Olympic marathon, Tamrat stepped in after Sisay Lemma’s injury and dominated the race, setting an Olympic marathon record with a time of 2:06:26.

Olympic champions Sifan Hassan and Letsile Tebogo have been announced as World Athletes of the Year. Tebogo was confirmed as men’s track athlete of the year, with Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone receiving the women’s honour. Sifan Hassan also claimed the women’s out of stadium crown, while Mondo Duplantis and Yaroslava Mahuchikh were named field athletes of the year.

World Athletes of the Year Hassan and Tebogo both won gold and claimed multiple medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Ethiopian athlete Sembo Alemayew, who broke the record to win the women’s steeplechase champion at the World U20 title in Lima, won the Women’s Rising Star award. She also finished fifth in the 3000m steeplechase final at the Paris Olympics.
