Biden extends Ethiopia sanctions for another year

U. S. President Joe Biden extended an executive order authorizing broad sanctions against those involved in the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia, originally signed on September 17, 2021, and set to expire on September 17, 2024

In a statement Thursday, Biden said that “the situation in and in relation to northern Ethiopia, which has been marked by activities that threaten the peace, security, and stability of Ethiopia and the greater Horn of Africa region,” continues to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.

“Therefore, I have determined that it is necessary to continue the national emergency declared in Executive Order 14046 with respect to Ethiopia,” Biden said.

During the Tigray conflict three years ago, Biden issued an executive order authorizing measures allowing the U.S. to impose sanctions on “those in the Government of Ethiopia, Government of Eritrea, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, and the Amhara regional government, among others, who continue to pursue conflict over negotiations to the detriment of the Ethiopian people.”

In May 2021, the US put visa restrictions and economic sanctions on some officials from Eritrea and Ethiopia.

In November 2022, the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) signed a peace deal, marking a significant step toward resolving a brutal war that had killed thousands, displaced millions, and left many in urgent need of food assistance, following US and AU-led negotiations in Pretoria. However, less than a year later, fighting erupted again in Amhara and has intensified ever since due to tensions over the Ethiopian government’s attempts to disband Fano insurgent groups.

  1. Thank you Mr. President! This is the right thing to do because war mongers are still on the prowl to ignite another bloody and senseless conflict which had already caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands and destruction in billions of dollars. I hope the ICC will follow Good Ole USA’s lead and press war criminal charges on those who committed war crimes.

May God Continue To Bless The United States of America!!!

  3. Meanwhile, let’s us not forget those innocent victims massacred by the demonic terrorists here in America on this day 23 years ago in 2001. The victims were various backgrounds including one of our own. Our hearts and prayers should go out to the families of the victims who still mourn the untimely deaths of their loved ones. I remember reading the story of one of countrymen who was killed in one the planes that was hijacked. He was returning from the old country after visiting his families there. May he and the rest of the victims rest in eternal peace!!!
