Ethiopia shines at 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships with ten medals

Ethiopia’s athletes delivered a powerful performance at the 2024 World Athletics Junior U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, securing gold, silver, and bronze medals across various events. The Championships that commenced on August 27, 2024, concluded on August 31, 2024.

The Ethiopian squad collected a total of 10 medals—six gold, two silver, and two bronze—finishing second on the medal table, just behind Team USA. Notably, two female athletes set two championship records: Medina Eisa clocked 14:39.71 in the women’s 5000m, and Sembo Almayew achieved 9:12.71 in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. Ethiopia’s medal haul was bolstered on the last day when Abdisa Fayisa clinched gold in the 1500m with a time of 3:40.51, while seventeen-year-old Saron Berhe perfectly timed her final push to win her first global title in the 1500m with a time of 4:16.64. General Berhanu Ayansa secured a surprising gold in the men’s 800m final. Aleshign Baweke’s gold-winning 3000m time of 8:50.32 in Lima was compared to Tirunesh Dibaba’s performances, with Marion Jepngetich taking silver for Kenya in 8:52.37 and Ethiopia’s Marta Alemayo earning bronze in 8:53.64.

 The Chinese squad settled in third place with a total of 11 medals with four gold and silver and three bronze medals. They were followed by Jamaica, Kenya, and South African squads with five, seven, and seven medals, respectively.

The 2024 edition of the Championships was held at the Estadio Atlético de la Videna in Lima, Peru.
