Worknesh Mesele and Tsige Duguma won their respective semifinal heats spectacularly, with world indoor champion Tsige clocking in at 1:57.47, her personal best. Worknesh Mesele punched her ticket to the final, finishing at 1:58.07, which was also her personal best performance in the 800m. World champion Kenyan Mary Moraa did so with a time of 1:57.86.
