Tributes have been paid to legendary singer Getachew Kassa who died on Tuesday aged 80 after a long illness. He had suffered ill health in recent years and ultimately passed away at Yekatit 12 Hospital. In a career spanning more than six decades, Getachew introduced a unique melodic tone to Ethiopia’s modern music history. His music was included in the influential Éthiopiques CD series, granting him wider recognition and solidifying his status as a cultural icon.
Since the inception of his career, when he began playing one of his hits, “Emegnalehu,” with Fetan Band at the Patrice Lumumba Bar in Wube Bereha during the 1970s, Getachew swiftly solidified his position as one of the most accomplished Ethiopian musicians of his era. His songs were influenced by Little Richards, Elvis Presley, Harry Belafonte, and fused American funk and jazz with traditional African music.
Loved ones, friends, and fans are now remembering the icon and reflecting on his legacy on social media “My heart is filled with profound sadness by the death of the beloved and renowned singer and my colleague,” expressed fellow singer and vocalist Kuku Sebsibe. Despite his passing, Kuku said that the enduring gift of his music continues to be with us all.
Ethiopia’s popular musician, Teddy Afro, also conveyed his condolences via social media. He wrote: “I offer my heartfelt condolences to the esteemed singer, who has left an indelible mark on Ethiopian music. Getachew was one of the greatest vocalists, lyricists, and instrumentalists.”
Singer Tsednia Gebremarkos posted a tribute to him, saying that Getachew Kassa gave us timeless music with his voice, which remains young despite the passage of time.
Yeshumnesh Beyerra, a lecturer at the Addis Ababa University Yared School of Music, expressed admiration for the singer and specifically highlighted the song “Ye Bezuhan Enat.” She revealed her admiration for the song, going so far as to rearrange it for their music group. Additionally, Yeshumnesh noted that many of Getachew Kassa’s songs possess a transcendent quality that resonates with the current generation, who will continue to sing them with reverence and appreciation.
Dawit Tsige said he was saddened by the passing of Getachew in a tribute to the singer. He extended his deepest sympathy to Getachew’s family, comrades, and fans.
