A reported airstrike has killed at least 26 people, while more than 50 are estimated to be wounded in the attack. The attack that occurred on Sunday morning in Finote Selam, a town in Amhara’s West Gojjam zone, is one of the deadliest in the region.
According to the resident’s accounts, the airstrike was directed at members of the Fano ethnic militia, who were apparently present in a Sinotruk parked in the city’s square. “Armed individuals associated with the Fano group were initially present in the Sinotruck parked in the city center. The aim was to target them. However, the explosion occurred approximately 20 minutes after the Sinotruk left the area. Subsequently, many bystanders were hurt,” a town resident told the BBC.
Residents have provided estimates ranging from 25 to 70 individuals killed, making it difficult to determine an exact figure. However, according to information from the city’s main state hospital as reported by the BBC, 26 people have been confirmed to have lost their lives in the attack.
The information from the hospital official indicates that the victims of the attack were largely dressed in civilian clothing or traditional Sunday attire.
A university teacher who was visiting a relative in the hospital told Reuters he had personally seen 14 bodies there and been told by a medical worker that another 12 had died.
55 individuals are currently being treated for injuries sustained in the explosion, according to reports.
