Tibor Nagy to improve trade and commercial ties with Ethiopia during trip
Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of African Affairs Tibor Nagy will travel to Addis Ababa next week to meet with the Ethiopian government and African Union leaders.
The visit is part of an eleven-day trip to four nations in the Horn of Africa, plus Germany, beginning on November 27 with the goal of promoting stronger trade and commercial ties and advancing peace and security, the Department of State said in a press release on Wednesday.
The US diplomat will participate on the sixth annual United States – African Union High-Level Dialogue while in Addis Ababa.
Last September, Tibor Nagy told members of a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee in Washington that Ethiopia has earned praise for its historic changes, according to report on the VOA. “Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has initiated groundbreaking reforms across most every area of Ethiopian society,” he was quoted as saying. “He deserves tremendous credit for his boldness in tackling issues previous governments have not addressed.”
The Assistant Secretary has previously visited Mali, Togo, Guinea, Mali, and Nigeria.
Nagy, whose family came to the United States from Hungary as political refugees in 1957, joined the foreign service in 1978. He spent over two decades in Africa as a foreign service officer, including stints as ambassador to Guinea from 1996 to 1999 and Ethiopia from 1999 to 2002, according to Foreign Policy.
